Ingredients

You need just a few simple ingredients for this Mexican Hot Chocolate recipe:

  • Milk - Use whole milk for the creamiest results.
  • Cocoa - You'll mix the milk with unsweetened cocoa powder, which gives the drink it's rich chocolatey flavor. If you'd like, you can substitute traditional Mexican chocolate for the cocoa powder called for in this recipe. Just keep in mind it's already been spiced with vanilla, cinnamon, and almond extract or crushed almonds. Adjust the spices called for in the recipe to taste.
  • Sugar - The drink is lightly sweetened with granulated sugar.
  • Spices - To give the cocoa its distinctive Mexican-inspired flavor, you'll season the drink with a cinnamon stick, vanilla extract, and little cayenne. The cayenne gives the hot chocolate a little kick; nothing that will burn your tongue, just a little heat at the back of your throat.

This recipe is naturally vegetarian. You can make it vegan / dairy free by using your favorite plant based milk.

How to Make Mexican Hot Chocolate

This delicious recipe couldn't be easier to make! You'll find a detailed recipe card below, but here's an overview of the step:

  1. Combine ingredients.Begin by adding the milk, cocoa powder, spices, and sugar to a medium pot, then whisk well. Don't worry if the ingredients take a while to combine ... just keep whisking. As the drink heats up everything will come together.
  2. Heat until hot.Cook the drink over medium heat, whisking frequently, until it's hot.
  3. Serve. When the cocoa is hot and smooth (no need to boil), transfer it to a mug, then serve topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon, or your choice of toppings. Tip: Traditional Mexican Hot Chocolate is not topped with whipped cream, but it makes a tasty addition!
