You don’t have to be a coffee fanatic to have heard about the whipped coffee trend that swept across the internet in early 2020. It didn’t take long for everyone who saw the drool-worthy photos of the drink on Instagram to pick up a package of instant coffee and a whisk and make it for themselves.

Now, we’re bringing whipped coffee back…but with an espresso twist.

THE WORLD OF WHIPPED COFFEE

Allow us to introduce you to whipped coffee, or, as it’s better known in South Korea where it originated, dalgona coffee. This drink rose to popularity on TikTok during the early days of quarantine and stay-at-home orders in 2020, which is why it’s also been dubbed “quarantine coffee.”

This coffee is typically made by whisking (or whipping with an electric mixer) instant coffee powder, granulated sugar, and hot water until the ingredients reach a fluffy, pillow-like consistency. Then, the coffee fluff is poured over hot or cold milk.

YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 tablespoon of espresso
  • 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of milk
  • A whisk, electric whisk, or electric mixer

THE PROCESS:

Step 1:

The first step, of course, is to prepare the espresso. Once that’s done, pour a tablespoon of the strong coffee over the sugar in a small bowl.

Step 2:

Grab a whisk, and begin to whip the mixture until soft peaks form and the dark sugary coffee fades to a lighter shade of brown. It may take a few minutes before you see any results, but don’t lose hope! Just keep whipping, and you’ll have creamy coffee in no time.

Step 3:

Then, pour your milk of choice into a mug or tall glass and use a spoon to add the whipped coffee mixture on top of it. We used whole milk, but you can use your favorite milk alternative, like almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk, if you prefer. Stir until the two are blended well, and you’re ready to enjoy your cloud coffee creation!

ENJOY!

A big part of the creamy coffee’s appeal is its customizability, so once you’ve tried the classic recipe, feel free to experiment! Make the dalgona coffee recipe your own by adding things like a splash of vanilla extract, brown sugar, or cinnamon to the coffee whip for extra notes of flavor, or pour a bit of coffee creamer into your milk. Non-coffee drinkers can hop on the trend, too, and substitute ground coffee for hot cocoa or matcha powder.

Happy Caffeinating!

Does whipped coffee have to be instant? ›

No. Since the instant coffee is meant to dissolve in water it'll get the whipped effect but because ground coffee is courser and heavier and doesn't dissolve in water it won't whip.

Why isn't my whipped coffee working? ›

If your coffee isn't whipping properly, ensure that you've measured all ingredients accurately, as adding too much or too little of a certain ingredient can alter the texture of your dalgona. Remember that it's important to use a 1:1 ratio of espresso and sugar.

How do you make coffee not instant? ›

  1. Pour water into a saucepan and place it on the stove. Be sure you use more water than you normally would use if you were using a coffee maker.
  2. Add the coffee to the water and stir the coffee/water mixture.
  3. Turn the heat on your stove to medium-high and bring your coffee to a boil while stirring it occasionally.

How does instant coffee get whipped? ›

Why is my whipped coffee bitter? ›

The Coffee Is Too Finely Ground

Grinding coffee too fine is a common cause of bitterness (also known as over extraction). How do you know what grind size is right for you? This often requires a little experimentation, but here's a general rule of thumb based on each brew method: AeroPress: Coarse Sand Consistency.

Why is my whipped coffee foamy? ›

In this case, when we whip or froth coffee to form bubbles, the tail end of surfactants will face the bubbles. This essentially creates a barrier around each bubble, reducing the surface tension between the coffee and bubbles. The more we whip and froth the coffee, the more bubble barriers we create, which makes foam.

Can I use espresso ground coffee as instant coffee? ›

While the primary purpose of ground coffee is for traditional brewing methods, such as drip brewing, french press, or espresso machines, you can technically use ground coffee as a makeshift instant coffee substitute.

What is a major problem with instant coffee solutions? ›

5 The major problem with these 'instant-coffee' solutions is that they are invariably short-lived. If we stubbornly refuse to give up this search for quick solutions, all we do is end up on the wrong track. We never gain anything lasting from them.

How can I make my instant coffee more potent? ›

Add more teaspoons of coffee powder

One of the best ways to make your coffee stronger would be to add a few more teaspoons of coffee powder to your cup. It adequately makes your instant coffee up to twice as strong. So, also remember not to add more cream or milk after adding teaspoons of coffee powder.

Why is my whipped coffee not getting thick? ›

It could have been the type of instant coffee, adding too much water or the type of sugar you used. Make sure to use the ones I mentioned above for best results. As well, use a bowl that isn't too large because it difficult to whip air into it in the whisk/appliance can't catch all the ingredients.

Why isn't my whipped coffee getting fluffy? ›

Increase the Hot Water: Most recipes call for 1:1:1 ratio of all the ingredients but I found that adding a bit more hot liquid helps it froth up even more and it's also more light and airy. I typically now do a 1 part instant coffee : 1 part sugar : 1.5 part liquid ratio.

Does Starbucks instant coffee work for whipped coffee? ›
