What is the best food for skinny pigs? ›

Just like other guinea pigs, skinny pigs eat a mixture of hay, vegetables, and pellets, with the odd piece of fruit as a treat. And just like any pig, they need vitamin C in their diet and access to fresh water.

The skinny pig is a hairless guinea pig and has the same scientific name as the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus). Skinny pigs are guinea pigs that have a genetic mutation which makes them mostly hairless.

The following foods can be detrimental to your guinea pig's health. Do not feed it: beans, bok choy, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, chocolate, collard greens, dairy products, garlic, iceberg lettuce, lentils, nuts, onion, peanut butter, potatoes, rhubarb, green tomato tops and seeds.

Environmental Factors. Dirty cages, high humidity, and poor ventilation can contribute to skin problems in guinea pigs. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the cage are essential for preventing skin conditions.

Causes of weight loss include dental problems, liver or kidney diseases, intestinal disease, endocrine disease, infection and toxins — just to name a few.

Feed your pig whatever high-fat feed that it finds most palatable, and you find most affordable. Skim milk, yogurt, and dairy are also foods that can increase pig fat.

Hay and grass

Good-quality hay should make up most of your guinea pigs' diet, and they should always have it available to them. They should have fresh grass as often as possible too, ideally every day.

Fresh vegetables can be offered once a day and should be equivalent to 1/2 to one cup total per guinea pig per day. Leafy greens like romaine lettuce, red and green leaf lettuces, mustard or turnip greens, cabbage, kale, cilantro and parsley should comprise the bulk of your pig's fresh produce.

As an energy source, choose a grain mix of barley, wheat, sorghum and corn for your pig's diet. At least half the mix should be number two yellow corn. Though low in protein, it is considered a primary energy source in pig diets. It is also one of the most economical feedstuffs available for swine production.
